Our little shul defied the odds!

Just think about it. Last year at this time, there was a big “For Sale” sign in front of the building. A full Shabbos morning minyan was never guaranteed. The “Rabbi’s House” on Midland Street was in great disrepair and had a huge mortgage hanging over its head, worth more than the value of the house. We had absolutely no money in the bank.

Imagine the change! Today there is no “For Sale” sign in front of the building. On Shabbos/Purim alone we had 25 people in shul. Since the High Holidays we have had a minyan every Shabbos morning, followed by wonderful socializing at what we call “the Rabbi’s Cholent Kiddush.” The Midland street house was sold without a loss, and has been totally renovated. It will soon be on the market. We are not rich, but we have enough money in the bank to pay our bills and think about tomorrow. We want, however, to think beyond that, to our long range future, and that’s where you come in.

By agreeing to be a member and supporter of Congregation Shaarai Torah West, you helped us maintain our optimism that “the last remaining, fully functioning Orthodox shul in Worcester will not die.” We now need you to help us make good on that promise by meeting all your membership obligations and by donating to our Holiday Appeal. There are no guarantees that we will win this battle for survival. The future is filled with unknowns and we have a long way to go. With your help, however, we are hopeful that we will succeed and someday our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will look back on this time and say “thank God for those folks back then who did what they had to do to save our shul.”

Help us to continue to “defy the odds.” Please donate as generously as you can by sending a check to the shul (835 Pleasant St. Worc. 01602). Thanking you in advance,

Sincerely,

The Board of Congregation Shaarai Torah West. 4-11-11
